(This press release garnered coverage from three of the four Pittsburgh television stations and articles in the New Pittsburgh Courier , Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review .) Pittsburgh--It kills. Its victims are unsuspecting African-American women, and its paralyzing grasp has destroyed many lives, hopes, and dreams. There seems to be no stopping its rampage towards devastation. The killer is heart disease and prevention, its Achilles' heel, is the only way to alleviate the damage and suffering it has caused. On Saturday, November 1, at Mercy Hospital, African-American women of all ages are invited to challenge the disease's supremacy by participating in “A Celebration of Living: African-American Women Getting to the Heart of the Matter,” a free conference sponsored by the African-American Heart Health Awareness Committee of the American Heart Association. The conference is designed to promote awareness of the harmful effects of hypertension, cardiovascular disease and stroke to African-American women. Dr. Grace Cornish, a family therapist and accomplished best-selling author, is the keynote speaker. African-American women do not recognize heart disease as the leading cause of death today. In a recent survey, only 9% of all African-American women polled felt that heart disease was their greatest health risk. As alarming as this statistic is, the reality is that this disease can be prevented. This conference will help educate African-American women on ways to prevent the complications of cardiovascular disease and stroke, and how to lead healthier lifestyles. Registeration begins at 8:30 AM at Mercy. For further information, please call ... |
